Edgars, Rubaga Girls Strike 5-Year Deal

As the urge to develop women football in the country intensifies, Edgars Youth Programme (EYP) and Rubaga Girls Secondary School have entered into a partnership that will foster development of football among girls.

The partnership that was officially unveiled at the school playground in Rubaga on Wednesday will see the school provide the pitch, accommodation and guidance.

EYP will chip in with the footballing necessities including balls, coaches and other arrangements necessary. The partnership started with a 10-day camp that rolls off on Monday.

“Our dream is to create a team for the school and also in the mainstream football,” Edgar Watson, the director EYP said at the ceremony.

“We want to start with the girls in the right age and develop them with football ethics and maybe expose them to the outside world later.”

One of the advantages of the partnership, according to Watson, is that the school will always have girls coming in so the human resource will not be a problem.

Florence Namutebi, the Director of Studies (DOS) at the school, welcomed the partnership saying that it was an opportunity for the girls to be active since a bright student should also be active.

“The school has a vision of developing a holistic crop of girls, therefore this partnership is welcome,” the school DOS said.

“We are also happy to get involved with Edgars because it is a reputable organisation that has been handling both boys and girls.”

According to Edgar, the partnership will go a long way in bridging gaps that they have been experiencing.

“I am sure by the end of the five years we should be able to register a team in the region,” Watson said. Edgars also has a men’s team playing in the national league but still at regional level.

A few other girls in the neighbourhood, who have been deprived of training opportunities, will also have chance to mingle with the school girls during their training sessions.

Watson urged the girls to be disciplined as that will make them good footballers.

“A good footballer is one who is good both on and off the pitch,” Watson cautioned.
