Sharifah Nantumbwe Exclusive Interview After First Assignment As FUFA Instructor

Edgars Youth Programme coach Nantumbwe Sharifah was co-instructor in the recently concluded Crested Cranes CAF D coaching course at FUFA Technical Center-Njeru from 22nd to 27th July 2024 under tutorship of Mutyaba Bashir-FUFA Youth Football Development Manager.

Being her maiden assignment as FUFA Instructor, Sharifah had a Q&A session with our communications team about the experience:

How has your education and training at Edgars Youth Programme prepared you for this role as a course instructor?

My education and training at Edgars Youth Programme have been instrumental in preparing me. Edgars taught me valuable skills like leadership, communication and coaching.

Can you share some key learnings or experiences from Edgars that have been particularly impactful?

One key learning experience was understanding how to adapt my coaching and teaching style to meet the needs of different learners.

How did you feel when you were informed about your first assignment as a course instructor by FUFA and can you describe the task and your initial expectations?

When I received the invitation, I felt honored and excited! My task was to co-lead a coaching certification course for women working under the lead instructor Bashir Mutyaba.
Initially, I expected it to be somehow challenging, but under the guidance of my lead instructor, I was eager and managed to share my knowledge and experience.

Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your first assignment as a FUFA instructor?

One memorable moment was seeing the student coaches apply what they learnt in a practical session. It was fulfilling to know I had positively impacted. As for achievements, I’m proud to have contributed to increasing the number of certified female coaches in Uganda.

How do you see your role contributing to the empowerment of women in football?

As an instructor, empowering women by providing them with the skills and confidence to succeed in the football industry and also impacting on their lives for a great future is my goal.

What advice would you give to young girls aspiring to pursue a career in football, either as players or coaches?

My advice to young girls is to believe in themselves, work hard, seek knowledge and skills mentorship. Most importantly believe and pray to God for guidance.

Who has been your biggest supporter or mentor in your journey, and how have they influenced you?

I would like to thank FUFA and Director Ali Mwebe for the trust ,belief and encouragement plus Manager Bashir Mutyaba the lead instructor who guided and shared knowledge with us.
Not forgetting Edgars Youth Programme which has also been a significant influence, providing me with a supportive network, valuable training and platform for execution.

How has Edgars Youth Programme influenced your career and personal development?

Edgars Youth Programme has shaped my career and personal development by teaching me essential skills and providing opportunities for growth in regard to my career both as a player then and a coach currently.

In what ways do you think Edgars Youth Programme contributes to the broader goals of women empowerment in sports?

The team contributes to women’s empowerment in sports by creating a pipeline of skilled females who are groomed to professionals like exceptional players, coaches and leaders like me and other fellow women in the organization.
